On December 11th a new edition of "CafèTIC" took place. It is an event organized by GsBit (Balearic Association of Software, Internet and New Technologies) at Bar Cuba (Palma), where Carlos Alonso, CEO of Atmosphere & Smart Division of Wireless DNA explained the evolution from successfully transferring research developed at the university to being part of Wireless DNA innovation company. In fact, there are very few cases of researchers who make the leap into the business world, and those who want to do it cannot combine both occupations because current legislation prevents it.

Starting with his beginnings in the university sector (when he graduated in Physics) and then explaining his experience in administration (working in what was, at that time, the first General Directorate of Climate Change in a regional level in Spain), Carlos Alonso described how his knowledge of the academic field and his business concerns led him to leave his "comfort zone" in the administration area in order to launch into entrepreneurship.

This experience resulted in the creation of Meteoclim, a "spin-off" company (a business initiative promoted by members of the university community, which is characterized by basing its activity on the exploitation of new processes, products or services from the knowledge acquired and the results obtained at the University itself) but which encountered many obstacles in terms of university regulations and law: incompatibilities, procedures that lengthened over time, etc. In addition, the monetarization of a strict research company was very complicated.

However, obtaining the RESET prize for UIB Entrepreneurs in 2011 meant the possibility of having a work space in the Parc Bit Incubator, where José Mañas, CEO of Wireless DNA and Carlos Alonso met and could arrange later the integration of their companies. Meteoclim had a great experience in R&D knowledge and with Wireless DNA, their potential monetization increased exponentially. In fact, the current company they both manage is capable of conducting research based on the needs (present or potential) of society. Indeed, thanks to this integration, the professionals that are part of Wireless DNA have the possibility to carry out a lot more research than before, providing R&D solutions specialized in network monitoring, auditing and optimization.
