Wireless DNA develops a pioneering project in the Balearic Islands with the installation of smart containers in Marratxí

The Marratxí Town Hall has reached an agreement with WDNA to carry out a pilot project with intelligent containers that will allow to reduce infractions while increasing segregated waste collection. This is a pioneering project in a public administration of a municipality in the Balearic Islands, launched by Wireless DNA.

The team of engineers of the company has developed a technology which allows, through the installation of sensors, to determine in real time parameters such as weight, movement, temperature and the internal and external volume of the deposited waste.

The containers that will be part of this pilot test will be placed in two areas of the municipality, located in Nova Cabana and Pòrtol. Both locations will have four containers (one for each type of waste) equipped with a sensor that will measure in real time variables such as weight, movement, temperature and internal and external volume of waste, generating different reports. The correlation of these data sets will allow to know, for example, the average time for a container to become full after it was emptied; if there is a risk of fire and, also, if there is waste in the surroundings of the container. With the results obtained, the collection routes can be recalculated, together with different inputs, which will make waste management more effective.

The project, coordinated by the municipal area of Environment, has two main objectives: avoiding infractions and bad practices by neighbours at the time of depositing waste, and improving selective waste collection.
